There’s a version of château hunting that lives on Instagram. It’s all golden-hour towers, ivy in soft focus, and a gentle voiceover saying, “We finally found the one.”

Sometimes that version is true. But there’s also the real version, which involves driving an hour to see a place that looks like a fairytale from the outside and feels like a gothic novel on the inside. Or falling in love with a lakefront view only to learn you will own the land in front of it in the same way you “own” a parking spot you are not allowed to park in.

We toured seven châteaux we did not buy. Each one taught us something about France, old stone, hidden fine print, and our own limits. Some were breathtaking. Some were a lot. Some were almost ours until the banks said non. If you’ve ever wondered why people fall in love with French château listings and then mysteriously end up somewhere else, it’s usually not because they changed their minds. It’s because the details tend to appear right after you start imagining Christmas there.

Ok. Here are the seven.
